What is the Vans BMX Pro Cup Series?

The Vans BMX Pro Cup series debuts in 2017 as the world’s definitive platform for BMX park terrain competition, showcasing the most talented BMX athletes from across the globe. The Vans BMX Pro Cup kicks off its inaugural season in Sydney, Australia as the series embarks on a four-stop global tour, concluding with the crowning of the first-ever Vans BMX Pro Cup World Champion.

How did the Vans BMX Pro Cup Series come to be?

Vans has been supporting BMX on many levels for years, and from 2001-2004 worked with Vans BMX team rider Dennis McCoy (McCoy Productions) on the Vans Triple Crown of BMX Series. The series showcased a high level of riding in a fun atmosphere, and since that time, there has been a desire to create something even better.

In 2013, Vans returned as sponsor of the US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach. Jerry Badders, Vans Global Sports Marketing Manager, and Dennis McCoy approached Steve Van Doren about bringing a BMX event back to the beach. The inaugural Van Doren Invitational was a huge success and it returned to the Vans US Open for the next 3 years. In 2017, the decision was made to take VDI style events global, and the Vans BMX Pro Cup Series was born.

What is BMX Park riding?

Today, the most popular and accessible style of Park riding takes place in concrete parks all over the world. It’s the first type of terrain on which BMX Freestyle contests were held, beginning in 1982 at Skate City in Whittier, CA. There are literally thousands of concrete parks spread out over the globe, featuring bowls, spines, hips, extensions, escalators and elevation changes that allow for endless gaps and transfer lines. Massive airs, flow and style, and highly technical riding goes down daily at free public concrete parks that are open year-round. Concrete parks have become the common ground where all riding styles come together and their popularity continues to rise as more and more are constructed.
